Rebranding abortion

Sharron Angle, Republican candidate for US Senate in Nevada and for incumbent Democrat Harry Reid the gift that keeps on giving, is against allowing abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

Asked by conservative talk-radio host Bill Manders if she would support banning abortion even in cases of rape or incest, Angle said there are no acceptable reasons for an abortion:

Manders: Is there any reason at all for an abortion?

Angle: Not in my book.

Manders: So, in other words, rape and incest would not be something?

Angle: You know, I’m a Christian and I believe that God has a plan and a purpose for each one of our lives and that he can intercede in all kinds of situations and we need to have a little faith in many things.

Of course this is absurd, trying to impose her own religious beliefs on others including non-believers, even at the expense of people’s autonomous control over their body. But approaching opponents through reason doesn’t work in the argument over abortion, and these authoritarian nutjobs aren’t going away. Maybe instead of fighting them with logic and decency and constitutional law we need to adopt their tactics and use magical thinking of our own to safeguard individual rights.

Christians don’t have a problem with killing per se, the Bible is full of it and the excruciatingly painful sacrificial death of their Man-God was a necessary part of their Sky-God’s plan to establish a New Covenant and thereby provide for the salvation to eternal bliss of all humankind. What concerns them is the notion that human souls are being denied the ability to enter into that Covenant by not letting them be born.

So what I’m wondering is if maybe we should stop calling the intentional termination of a pregnancy “abortion” and instead refer to it as a “sacrifice” wherein those precious souls are baptized in utero and then given, as it were, expedited delivery.

Might as well incorporate as a religion, call it the Church of the Holy Short-Circuit Ascension, mandate the use of incense and music and require everyone involved to wear silly clothes and chant nonsense.

That should make it totally OK because y’know God has a plan and we should all just have a little faith.
