Just to complete the jerkoffery

My alma mater, proud new employer of The Honorable Alberto Gonzales, former US Attorney General in the Bush (43) administration, has today suspended football head coach Mike Leach indefinitely, six days before the team is to play in the Alamo Bowl.

Allegations suggest Leach abused an injured player, one Adam James, son of ESPN announcer Craig James, the former SMU standout (from the class whose graduation immediately preceded the NCAA slamming the death penalty on Southern Methodist University’s football program, the only time that’s ever happened. James and his teammates were alleged to take pay cuts when they went to play in the NFL). James suffered a concussion earlier this month in practice and came back to the sidelines in shades. Leach reportedly sent him to rest in a darkened room — with someone to watch him, because James allegedly had a reputation for skipping class and sloughing off.

Allegedly, Leach confined James to a darkened room on two occasions.

Never played any college ball, me; but I have had concussions. Back in ’79 I was confined — on bed rest — to a darkened room as treatment for one I picked up courtesy of a car wreck.

What’s not an allegation? Leach’s contract calls for an $800,000 bonus if he’s coaching the Texas Tech Red Raiders Dec. 31.

A dark business, indeed. Leach has now been fired, and there may be much more to this story than has been told because it sure doesn’t make any sense so far. I quite admire his emphasis on academics, unusual in high-pressure college football. Apparently Daddy James and somebody at TT got their fur rubbed the wrong way.

I’ve got my quibbles with my alma mater — the TTU administration makes it a fairly hellish place to work if you’re not a “go along to get along with the big shots” type, and FSM, Ceiling Cat and all the gods know Mike Leach is nobody’s suckup — and the school’s got a heavy right-wing bias in its ideological leadership of the moment.

Since Coach Leach wasn’t, technically, employed by the State of Texas but was an independent contractor for the University, he may indeed have some legal recourse.

The tragic thing is, this is all ego among what should be adults. Kids are going to end up getting the raw end of this deal, sure as shooting.
